A horizontal form fill seal machine does not simply “make a pouch.” It controls a sequence of references—film tension, print position, fold geometry, seal location, opening, filling and top sealing—so that each station receives a pouch in a repeatable condition.

1. Start with a controlled roll of film
The film unwind supplies the web; its job is to let material move without sudden changes in tension. Web guiding maintains edge position, while print registration—when the artwork has an eye mark or defined repeat—keeps graphics and cut positions aligned to the intended pouch pitch.
These controls are linked. If the web drifts, the fold may move. If the repeat is not read consistently, the cut or seal may land in the wrong visual position. Before deciding that a downstream unit is at fault, confirm the actual film construction, web width, repeat and registration feature against the approved specification.

2. Create the pouch geometry before product enters
The forming section turns a flat web into the planned pouch profile. For a standard stand-up pouch, that normally means controlling the main panels and bottom-gusset geometry before the relevant seams are sealed. A zipper, shaped contour or fitment changes the material path and adds its own positioning and sealing requirements.
Fold location
The fold establishes where panels and gusset relate to each other. A moving fold reference can appear later as an uneven bottom, off-centre graphics or inconsistent pouch stance.
Jaw contact
Seal jaws need the intended material layers, position and dwell. A seal can look acceptable immediately after discharge but still be unsuitable if it was made through contamination or outside a stable process window.

3. Separate, hold and open the pouch without losing its reference
Once the lower pouch structure has been made, the line cuts or indexes it into a transfer system. Grippers, carriers or equivalent handling devices hold the pouch while the mouth is opened for filling. This is the point where the line moves from web handling to pouch handling.
The opening system must create a usable mouth without damaging the seal area or allowing the pouch to shift. Product should enter the intended filling zone; splash, dust, strings, trapped air or a poorly matched nozzle can then become a sealing issue rather than a dosing issue.

4. Close the pouch and verify the result
At the top-seal station, jaw temperature, contact pressure, dwell, cooling and the real condition of the seal area work together. The correct setting is not a universal number: it changes with film structure, product behaviour, pouch geometry and line setup. The meaningful question is whether the finished seal meets the agreed acceptance method.
Inspection may include visual checks, seal-strength testing, leak testing or other agreed controls. Choose the method according to the application and acceptance criteria; a visual check alone is not an engineering substitute for a specified test.

That is why a machine quotation should be based on more than a pouch photo. The film, drawing, product behaviour, fill range and acceptance targets define the process window the line must manage.
Treat the line as one controlled chain
When a finished pouch is unstable, the visible symptom is often downstream of the cause. A poor top seal may begin with product entering the seal area; that may begin with a pouch that did not open correctly; and that may begin with a shifted web reference upstream. The fastest diagnosis is to identify the first process variable that became unstable, then confirm each handoff forward from that point.
Questions to settle before a machine trial
- What is the controlled pouch drawing, including seal zones and any zipper, spout or shaped contour?
- What film construction, web width, repeat and registration feature will be supplied?
- What are the product's flow, cleanliness and filling constraints at the seal area?
- Which finished-pouch checks define acceptance: visual condition, leak test, seal strength, or another agreed method?
- Which change parts and trial materials are required for the first approved format?
